Mama Mia A Memoir of Mistakes, Magazines and Motherhood eBook Mia Freedman Reviews

I remember kind of hating Mia Freedman when I was a teenager. She'd appear in the front of Cosmo with her perfect straight hair, thin body and big smile talking about how fabulous she was, how great Cosmo was and wasn't it fantastic to be alive? Maybe if you were the editor of Cosmo at the age of 24!

I have to say that reading this book humanised her quite a bit. It's good to know that Mia (see? I can call her Mia now) is actually a real person and not a figure head for a lifestyle that most of us don't have but are continually being sold by the media. What? You're not skinny, with a gorgeous boyfriend, a wardrobe full of designer clothes, a ton of fun friends to have over for dinner parties and a high profile job with "the girls"? Yeah, me neither. But apparently Mia was not all of those things either. She had her struggles both personally and professionally and what is endearing about the book is her complete honesty with both.

I'm not a mother and have no plans to become a mother, but the writing around her four children (one died before birth) is clearly where Mia's heart is because it was funny, revealing and well written. Her reflections on her time in magazines were a little vague, like raking over the coals of a long gone relationship smiling over the good times but also being a little dazed and confused about what you were actually doing and why it seemed so important at the time.

If you want to work in magazines you should definitely read the first half of this book. If you want to balance life as a working mother, well, I don't know how much this book will resemble your experiences. Mia had a nanny, supportive family to look after her children, a cleaner and a high profile job complete with travel, excellent money and all the trappings of success. Even with her more human aspects on display, one gets the feeling that Mia's overall life is charmed. That doesn't mean she hasn't had disappointments or heartache, but she's had an incredible amount of lucky/good things in her life too. So I think I'll continue to hate her, but just a tiny little bit.
Mia Freedman is a woman who seems to have it all so it was really interesting to read about her struggles and insecurities. I loved the insiders view of the magazine industry and enjoyed her descriptions of family life.

The only negative note for me was her attitude towards the klepto nanny who stole 16 items of clothing and initially denied this before eventually returning them all unwashed. The girl clearly had issues and the fact that she apologized and returned the clothes showed remorse. I found it a bit off that someone in Mia's privileged position would expose and mock her in a book.

Mia was also devastated when the nanny didn't say a word about her daughter after she'd been fired. First of all, the girl had just lost her job, do you really think your daughter is going to be the more pressing thing on her mind? Second, no matter how cute and amazing you think your child is, they aren't anywhere near that amazing to the people who are paid to look after them. Pretending to love your child is part of their job.

Apart from this minor quibble I really enjoyed this book. Mia's self-deprecating humor and anecdotes made it a fun, entertaining read.
