"It seemed a terrible shame to meet my end in Iowa; I couldn't imagine any where more disappointing to die. The scenery hadn't changed for weeks and I was slowly dissolving into stimulation-deprived madness. My current predicament, then – attempting to escape through cornfields from a gun-toting alcohol soaked rancher – was not something I expected."

Terrified at the prospect of a life spent behind a desk, without challenge or adventure, Leon took off to cross America on an overloaded bicycle packed with everything but common sense.Over five months and 6,000 miles, he cycled from New York to Seattle and then on to the Mexican border, facing tornadoes, swollen river crossings and one hungry black bear along the way. But he also met kind strangers who offered their food, wisdom, hospitality and even the occasional local history lesson, and learned what happens when you take a chance and follow the scent of adventure.

The Road Headed West A Cycling Adventure Through North America eBook Leon McCarron Reviews

Finished reading this book as I am preparing for a bicycle tour this summer. Found it very helpful to read about the many little adventures that happen along the way. This book is building some stoke in me as I prepare for my trip this summer!
This a brilliant book for anyone interested in travel or adventure, or indeed anyone with a dream they want to fulfill. Leon is an inspiring character with a wonderfully funny and warm writing style and I guarantee this book will have you itching to get out and begin your own adventure by the time you've finished.
It seems terribly pithy to describe a book as “laugh out loud funny” but the truth is that McCarron’s book is funny and it made me laugh out loud.

More importantly, however, this felt like a book with a soul. Though he is scrupulously light-hearted throughout, McCarron's ruminations through the book and the gradual evolution of his trip illuminate a deeper sense of purpose and it is this which makes the book so compelling. The McCarron of this journey is a human one, easy to relate to and impossible not to get behind. You want him to win and you want to find out how he does it.

In short, this is a book into which the author has put as much heart as he so clearly did his cycling trip. Very entertaining and highly recommended.
Sounds like this guy’s an unlikeable twit, and didn’t even want to be on the trip. Skip it for another cyclist travelogue by someone who actually enjoy the physical challenge of the ride, and who would have been interesting to talk to.
I want to thank Mr. McCarron for letting us share his memoirs from his trip across the US. This is one of the most wonderful books I've ever read. But, in order to enjoy it, one has to be a free soul, a lover of the open spaces and a lover of one's solitude. also, for those who want to break free, to live in minimalism, we are not taking anything from this life when our time arrives. For me it was an inspiration. I read it two times in a week. Why? Because in February I'm starting a self crusade across the lower 48 states. It will be 16.000 miles in some 16 months. Not a competition, just to really get to know this wonderful country that adopted me as its own son. I walked from Venezuela to Perú. Walked the whole coast of North Africa. Walked from Moscow to Vladivostok and took a fishing boat to Japan. I share the author emotions as mine. Once again Mr. McCarron. thanks for sharing your experience with the world.
Wonderful book, very well written, epic adventure and very authentic.
